While you may not feel it is necessary for your personal Home First Aid Kit, a tourniquet should definitely be part of any Outdoor Kit (ex: Hiking Kit, Wilderness Kit, etc.), or any First Responder Kits; The tourniquet is an essential life-saving tool that can truly mean the difference between life and death.
This tactical tourniquet has a 1-1/2inch constricting band for increased pressure to reduce blood loss and increased patient comfort. While the hook and belt is designed for easy tourniquet application even for beginners, the aluminum handle is durable, and its strong holding power is top of the line for tourniquets.
When to Use a Tourniquet
If you encounter someone bleeding and the bleeding won’t stop with applied pressure and gauze, a tourniquet may be needed. Prior to utilizing a tourniquet, be sure to apply other first aid methods to control bleeding; including applying pressure to the wound with gauze or towels. If the blood soaks through the gauze, add another layer. Do not take off the gauze since it can hinder the clotting process. If the bleeding persists and doesn’t decrease in severity, a tourniquet may be your best and only alternative.
Tips:
- Always apply the tourniquet between the injury and the heart of the injured individual.
- You’ll want to apply the tourniquet several inches above the injury on the injured arm or leg.
- If the injury is below the elbow or knee, you’ll need to tie the tourniquet in a square knot above the joint.
- After securing the tourniquet, medical attention must be immediately sought.
