With the Fourth of July right around the corner, it’s the most popular time of year for fireworks usage. While an elaborate fireworks show is a July 4th staple for some, there are some precautions in fireworks safety to be taken if you are planning on launching fireworks yourself. Personal firework shows with family and friends are almost always a great time! Don’t let improper firework safety or precaution ruin the holiday! Even worse, these explosive devices can cause severe damage to those lighting and watching them. You must take the following steps seriously in order to ensure a safe and fun holiday.
Stay Informed
Make sure you are informed of what type of fireworks you are setting off. Reading all cautionary labels and instructions could save you or someone else from a serious burn; for example, a firework that launches into the sky, vs. one that stays on the ground and shoots a fountain of sparks for a certain amount of time. If you ever feel unsure about lighting a firework, it is best to not light it. If a firework ever seems cheaply made or even illegal, you should also not light it. In the event of a burn, make sure you have burn gel or a Burn First Aid Kit on hand. Cold packs can also be helpful in the event of a burn. These items will also be valuable in the event of a grilling accident at this years picnic, or in some cases, even severe sunburn. Unfortunately, some will face injures related to fireworks exploding in their hand. First of all, never light a firework that is in your hand. If you or someone else faces serious damage to the hands or body because of this, it may be best to call 911. This is especially important if the explosion has removed skin.
Stay Responsible
Make sure there is a responsible, sober adult launching the fireworks. Children should not be in charge of lighting the wick, nor should someone under the influence of alcohol. We understand that the fun parts of the 4th of July for many are fireworks, cookouts, and drinks with friends. However, you should consider lighting off the fireworks before there are no sober adults left… This is best practice especially if there will be children watching the fun light show.
Find an Open Area
Be sure to set off fireworks in an open area, free of houses, trees, or other buildings. Multiple things can go awry in a firework launching area that is too small or has too many trees and structures. One of the worst situations you can find yourself in on the 4th of July is with an accidental fire. Many have started accidental fires because they did not take proper precautions when lighting fireworks.
Firework Laws
Be sure to obey any laws regarding Fireworks use. Though potentially more relaxed due to the holiday traditions, police will reprimand you if any misuse or reckless behavior with Fireworks is occurring. You truly can still have a 4th of July that is full of fun while obeying the law.

While the Fourth is a time to celebrate and traditionally a time for Fireworks, please be safe, be aware, and have a first aid kit on hand just in case.
