The Holidays are one of the most exciting times of the year, but with the festivities come hidden dangers that can put a damper on your holiday season. Everyone wants to have a safe and restful holiday season, so without further ado here are 5 dangers to avoid during the holiday season.
Christmas Tree Mold
Real Christmas trees can bring mold spores into your home and cause allergic reactions or even sickness. The mold spores grow on live trees and when you bring the tree into your house, you could be bringing unwanted spores in as well. The solution to this problem is to hose down your live tree before you bring it in the house and being sure to keep your distance from the tree if you have allergies already.
Dogs Eating Chocolate
Chocolate is never more abundant than during the holiday season, and while it is a great treat for humans, it is poisonous for dogs. Fido may not realize that chocolate can cause sickness and even be fatal, so be sure to keep all chocolate treats out of reach of your dog. Be sure that there are no treats in the tree or on low tables that your dog may get. On Christmas morning be sure to move any chocolate gifts out of the way before your pup gets too interested in having a taste.
Electrical Fires
Electrical fires can happen at any time, but they are very common during holiday times with the addition of christmas lights. These can overtax your circuits and cause them to heat up as well as catch fire. It is important to not plug too many lights into one outlet, especially in an older house where there may not be good wiring or fuses to protect against electrical fire. Using surge strips can safely allow you to plug in many lights without having to worry about the extra load that you might get form adding the extra lights.
Unattended candles
Candles add to the ambiance of any celebration, but as with any open flame you must exercise extreme caution. While tipping a burning candle over can happen, it is more common that someone will light a bunch of candles and then forget and leave one burning while they leave or go to bed. Be sure to look through your house after you have candles lit and blow them all out fully so they don’t start any fires.
Exploding Turkeys
While exploding turkeys have been a topic of many different comedy routines, they do happen when people are trying to cook either Thanksgiving of Christmas dinner. You should never put a frozen turkey into a deep fryer because it will explode and shoot out, probably causing bodily harm when it sprays boiling oil everywhere. Be sure to fully thaw your turkey before deep frying it and you will have a great holiday meal!
